I don’t always know what I am doing but I do know what interests me — the borderlands between abstraction and the depiction of recognizable things, like a flower or a face. Abstraction speaks for itself. It is a fabrication of colour and shape, with or without deliberate structure. The digital environment offers many opportunities for creation based on the coming together of abstraction and more literal depiction. I refer to it as the borderlands because it skirts both realms and allows snippets of composition to be constructed into a final piece. The process can be mentally exhausting because it demands ongoing decision making about what works and what doesn’t. Lots of work ends up in the bin after days of effort.
